Full definition
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) focuses on visibility inside AI-generated answers—ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, and similar surfaces—rather than only classic blue-link rankings. Practitioners shape public content, entity signals, crawl access, and citation-worthy sources so models have clear, trustworthy material to draw from.
GEO overlaps with SEO but is not identical: rankings in Google still matter, yet many AI answers synthesize multiple sources or answer without a click. Success metrics often include citations, brand mentions in prompts, AI referral traffic, and share of voice across answer engines.
A common misconception is that GEO is a single file or hack. In practice it combines technical access (robots.txt, structured data), entity consistency, authoritative third-party mentions, and content that answer engines can extract cleanly. See also AEO and AI Visibility.
Example
A B2B SaaS brand publishes clear product documentation, Organization schema, and an llms.txt summary, then tracks whether ChatGPT and Perplexity cite its docs when users ask for tools in its category.
