Full definition

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) targets platforms and features that deliver a synthesized or direct answer: AI chatbots, AI Overviews, voice assistants, and similar interfaces. The goal is to be the source (or one of the sources) behind that answer, not merely to rank a URL in a ten-blue-link list.

AEO and GEO are closely related and often used interchangeably. Some teams use AEO for answer-first SERP features and GEO for broader generative/chat visibility. Both emphasize extractable definitions, structured data, entity clarity, and trustworthy citations.

AEO does not replace technical SEO; crawlable pages, clear headings, and accurate facts still underpin what answer engines can use. See GEO and Answer Engine.

Example

An FAQ page uses plain-language questions as headings, concise answer-first paragraphs, and FAQPage schema so both people and answer engines can reuse the Q&A structure.
