Full definition

AI search blends retrieval, ranking, and generation. Users ask natural-language questions and receive synthesized answers with optional citations. It coexists with traditional search rather than fully replacing it; many journeys still mix chat, classic SERPs, and branded navigational queries.

Systems differ: some ground answers in live web retrieval, others lean more on training-time knowledge, and still others combine both with tool use. That variation means a brand’s “AI search visibility” is multi-surface, not a single rank position.

Brands typically measure impact through referral logs, prompt batteries, citation checks, and technical readiness (crawler access, entity clarity, extractable pages). Treat industry adoption headlines as directional unless methods are transparent. See GEO and Answer Engine.
