Full definition
AI Mode is Google’s deeper generative search interface: users can explore topics with follow-ups, comparisons, and synthesized answers while remaining in Search. It differs from a one-shot AI Overview snippet by supporting more chat-like exploration, though both are generative Search features.
For SEO and GEO, AI Mode expands zero-click and citation dynamics. Being a supporting source, appearing in linked references, or influencing the synthesized narrative can matter even when traditional blue-link CTR changes.
Treat AI Mode as related to—but not identical with—AI Overviews and standalone Gemini chat. Measurement still relies on experiments, Search Console where available, and manual prompt checks. See AI Overview, Zero-Click Search, and AEO.
