Full definition

ChatGPT is a consumer and business chat interface built on OpenAI large language models. Users interact with multi-turn prompts; responses may draw on model training, optional web browsing, file uploads, custom GPTs, and other tools rather than only static knowledge.

In AI search and GEO work, ChatGPT is a primary answer surface: brands appear as recommendations, product descriptions, or cited sources when users ask category or research questions. Visibility is not a classic rank position; it is presence, accuracy, and citation inside generated answers.

Site owners influence ChatGPT indirectly through public web content, crawler policy (for example GPTBot versus live user fetches), clear entity facts, and third-party corroboration. See GEO, GPTBot, and AI Visibility.

Example

A founder asks ChatGPT for “best project management tools for a 20-person remote team” and compares which brands are named, how they are described, and whether any official docs are linked.
