Full definition

Where classic SERPs emphasize ten blue links, answer engine results prioritize a direct response: a paragraph or structured summary, optional source cards or inline citations, and often multi-turn refinements. The unit of competition is inclusion in that synthesis—not solely rank position one.

Results can mix model knowledge, retrieved documents, and tool outputs (calculators, shopping, maps). Quality varies: well-grounded systems show sources; weaker paths may hallucinate or omit attribution.

AEO and GEO aim to improve how often a brand’s facts and URLs appear inside these results. See Answer Engine, Citation Card, and Zero-Click Search.

Example

A query for “what is entity SEO” returns a definition block with three source links rather than only a list of ranking URLs.
