Full definition

Probes are the atomic unit of AI visibility research: run a prompt, capture the raw answer, score mention, position, sentiment, citations, and errors. Repeating probes builds a prompt battery and enables drift detection.

Control variables (account state, browsing mode, locale, date) or label them when control is impossible. One lucky probe is anecdote; systematic probes are measurement.

Automate capture where policy allows, but keep human review for hallucination and sentiment quality. See Prompt Battery, Model Drift, and Citation Rate.
