Crawlers & botsAI search glossary

This term is part of the full AI search glossary.

Full definition

Operators publish crawler IP ranges (for example Google and some AI providers) so site owners can allowlist verified bots. Allowlists must be updated when providers expand ranges; stale lists cause intermittent crawl failures.

Allowlisting is stronger than trusting User-Agent strings alone, which can be spoofed. Combining reverse DNS verification, official IP lists, and logging is more robust.

For AI and SEO crawl health, allowlists prevent security tooling from treating desired bots as attackers. See Bot Management, WAF Bot Score, and User-Agent.
