Sitemaps complement internal links; they do not guarantee indexing. They often include lastmod hints and live at /sitemap.xml or are referenced from robots.txt. Large sites commonly use a sitemap index that points to multiple child sitemaps.
Stale URLs, soft-404s, and non-canonical variants in sitemaps waste crawl budget and can confuse both search and AI discovery systems. Accurate lastmod values help when they reflect real content changes rather than rebuild timestamps.
