Full definition

Many assistant products let users group chats into a project and upload PDFs, docs, or notes that the model retrieves for that workspace. Project knowledge is local grounding: it steers answers toward the team’s materials rather than only the open web or training data.

This pattern appears under different product names (projects, knowledge bases, collections). It is useful for internal accuracy but is not the same as public GEO—external users asking generic prompts will not see private project files.

Publishers who want broad AI visibility still need crawlable public pages; project knowledge helps closed audiences. See Grounding, RAG, Custom GPT, and Context Window.

Example

A legal team uploads policy PDFs into a Claude project so contract questions cite the internal playbook instead of generic web advice.
